Why am I feeling so anxious?

Anxiety is a word we hear a lot. While anxiety is a universal human emotion, it can become a serious issue if it grows too large or too constant. Understanding anxiety - what is is, why it happens and how to manage it - is the first step toward feeling calmer and more in control.

Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress, danger or uncertainty. It’s part of our built-in ‘flight, fight or freeze’ system - a way the brain keeps us sane from potential threats. A little anxiety can actually be useful. It helps us prepare, stay alert and perform under pressure. For example, feeling nervous before an interview or presentation can sharpen our focus and energy.

However, when anxiety becomes excessive, constant or out of proportion, it can interfere with daily life. That’s when we move from normal, healthy anxiety to physical and emotional disturbance. Anxiety can show up differently for everyone but some of the most common symptoms include a racing heart, stomach upset, headaches, difficulty sleeping, feeling ‘on edge’ or worrying too much. If these symptoms are intense, it might be time to seek professional help.

The good news is that anxiety is highly treatable. With the right help, most people can reduce their symptoms and regain a healthy balance. By talking to a professional, you can identify where your feelings are coming from and how to replace them with calmer, more realistic ways of thinking and relating.
